Ladies and Gentlemen, feast your eyes upon the most Japanese thing of all Japanese things.
Micah Moore and Long Thai of Beatdown Boogie journeyed to Japan, courtesy of “Cloud Riders” publisher Hashtag Comics, and ventured into Robot Restaurant, an establishment that’s as much an explosion of sensory overload as it is an eatery. Yes, there are costumed performers decked out as dancing robots in shiny metallic-looking suits. That’s the simplest of appetizers, though.
The metallic overlords of this over-the-top dining experience are showered in blinding neon and joined in a seemingly ceaseless parade by a cast of friends only found in Japan. There are dancers bedecked in sparkly, skimpy, and very feathery wardrobe. There are zebras that appear to be riding piggyback on horses. There are zebra cowboys. There’s a float-riding pop-rock band. There’s a drum group wearing strings of neon lights. We’re pretty sure we saw a tyrannosaurus rex.
You know, we can’t even hate that actual robots seem to be an afterthought. It’s Japan, where there’s always just a little bit of a sense that they’re proud to go 100% their own way, whether anyone from outside their shores think them a bit strange or not. It’s the epitome of quirky, nerdy joy with absolute indifference to judgment.
We can’t help but admire that.
