Official Suicide Squad Trailer & Queen Proves This Is NOT Just Fantasy
Warner Bros. and DC have decided to address some mild fan skepticism toward the upcoming anti-hero ensemble action flick SUICIDE SQUAD the way any marketing pro in the know would: just slap some Queen on it.
You know, like you do.
The two-and-half minute clip is pretty standard fare, as DC trailers go. It introduces the general idea of enigmatic government agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembling a team of convicted dangerous villains including quirky psychotic Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), snide sharpshooting assassin Deadshot (Will Smith) and elite military leader Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) among others to take on a mission with impossibly piss-poor survival odds – and a need for utmost deniability at the top.
We’re even treated to a few fleeting glimpses of Jared Leto’s debut as the unlucky soul tasked with the intimidating challenge of succeeding the late Heath Ledger’s Academy Award-honored portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT. It’s all set to quick random shots of shadowy action also including looks at Killer Croc, June Moon/Enchantress and Katana that’s pretty typical Super-Serious Business.
But, hey, it’s set to a truncated rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. So…yay?
Yes, DC and WB both remain convinced that every character in this universe can only hold anyone’s attention when basically shoehorned into Batman’s signature palette. Yes, we’re going to be damned annoyed if Will Smith turns in an irritating mugging performance that’s more Agent J than Hancock. Yes, Harley Quinn looks like a junkie hooker in bad cosplay and Joker reminds us of a particularly doofy Juggalo.
Will it surprise us? Could DC capitalize on Sony’s SINISTER SIX falling through by dealing us a groundbreaking “villain”-focused feature? Well, we only have about six-and-a-half months before we find out when SUICIDE SQUAD hits theaters everywhere on Aug. 15.
