Few events in any human lifetime equal the emotional gravity and ultimate joy that accompanies a child’s birth. The hours leading up to it are typically wrought with excruciating pain many women wouldn’t wish on your average war criminal. That’s why Katie Stricker Curtis decided to treat the world to a miracle of birth easily like no other.
Yes, that is the same talking Chewbacca mask that Candace “Chewbacca Mom” Payne made instantly famous with one of 2016’s most infectiously gleeful viral unboxing videos last year. When Curtis went into labor, the Detroit mother-to-be decided that if she was going to howl in agony while evacuating a human being the size of a small watermelon through a bodily opening normally the circumference of a dime, she would do it with the heart not of a woman creating life, but a proud Wookie singing the song of her people.
Did it hurt any less? We seriously doubt it. However, hearing her painful cries translated into the Wookie language Shyriiwook gave her new son Jayden a worldly debut more memorable than just about any future “Star Wars” geek ever conceived. In fact, it rapidly picked up more than 210,000 views after Curtis uploaded it to Facebook.
“Just because I’m about to be a mom doesn’t mean I have to grow up!” she said. “Never take life too seriously!”
