When we first saw that scene with Tom Cruise flicking through data in Minority Report, pretty much everyone decided at once that that was what the future should look like.
And actually one of the companies that has been working the very hardest to bring us that future is none other than Microsoft.
First they showed us ‘RoomAlive’ – an update to the already incredible ‘IllumiRoom’ that uses an incredibly smart projector to turn your room into a level from a video game. The projector could project a flat-looking image onto any surface and use this to transform the ambience of the room and to create interactive characters capable of running across surfaces and being shot at with toy guns.

Now ‘HoloLens’ is looking to take this idea and apply it to scenarios outside of gaming. The idea is that holograms can be used to bring up displays and Windows 10 Universal Apps that the user will be able to see and interact with through a headset.
The idea was demoed by an employee on stage who built a quadrocopter simply by pointing their finger and giving voice commands to control a 3D model. It’s pretty exciting stuff but for now it’s only a demo. Who knows how long it will be until we can all get our hands on something like this?
